My passion is taking pictures of people. Whether actors, models, children or businesspeople, the concept is always the same; capture what is unique. I strive to make people comfortable and to make taking a photograph fun by creating an environment of low pressure and discovery.
Before becoming a professional photographer, I worked in the music video and film industry where I had the opportunity to work with some of the greatest visual innovators of our time. Eventually I felt I needed to be doing something to express my own vision and moved into the world of set photography, shooting such stars as Jewel (my images of her were picked up by W and Rolling Stone magazines), Tori Amos, Kid Rock, Twista and many others.
When the digital revolution arrived, I expanded my business to include product photography (tabletop, in studio, and on location) but I never lost sight of what drew me to photography in the first place – a love of people. I consider every picture I take to be a portrait and I strive to capture the essence of my subject by encouraging people to become comfortable, relaxed, and enjoy themselves. For many people having their picture is about as much fun as going to the dentist, but it doesn’t have to be this way. I like to take the time to get to know people, to find out how they feel about the process of getting pictures taken, as well as their expectations.
One area this approach has worked extremely well is with actors’ headshots. My background in production (both BA and MFA) has gained me insight into how to direct actors to create a headshot that incorporates their own vision of where they want the image to take them.
A great picture is more than composition, lighting, and digital technology. A great photograph has impact – and that comes out of the interaction of photographer and subject. While anyone can take a picture, I create pictures…through an appreciation of the uniqueness of the person I’m working with and a dedication both to their comfort and aspirations.
I look forward to shooting with you,
Jordan
